Summer Suggestions - UGA Undergraduate Admissions Summer Suggestions I hope everyone is having a great start to their summer!Hi, Iâm Lindsey Whittaker, Assistant Director of Admissions, and I will be handling the blog for the next 1.5+ years. While I have been with this office for five years, this is my first time working on the blog in this capacity. I appreciate your patience as I transition into this role. As school is ending and summer vacation is beginning, I would like to take some time to offer a few suggestions of things you can do during your break. Read! Many of you are going to have summer reading lists that you need to complete prior to school starting back. Make sure you read all of your required books. (Notice I said books, not Cliffs Notes, Spark Notes, Wikipedia, etc.). Also, pick up a few books to read for fun. Reading is not just a way to pass time. The benefits of reading include boosting test scores, building vocabulary, and improving memory, just to name a few. Send us your test scores. Youâre not on our radar until you have contacted us in some manner, typically by sending SAT and/or ACT scores. This means we canât invite you to programs, send you admissions updates, etc. You can send your scores to us as soon as you take the test, you donât have to wait until you apply. Weâre going to use your best score possible, so why not go ahead and have them sent to us? Roughly 500 applicants last year were incomplete because they forget to have test scores sent. Donât let this be you! Visit colleges. Many of you are going to have travel plans this summer. If your travel happens to land you near a college that youâre interested in, go ahead and schedule a visit. Itâs never too early to start visiting colleges. Do you live within an hour of Athens? Go ahead and schedule a visit to UGA! (www.visit.uga.edu) Organize, organize, organize! Most students are going to be applying to multiple colleges. Each college can differ in what is required from a first year applicant. How are you going to keep everything straight? Start a file folder for each college you are planning on applying to. Get a copy of your transcript, make sure you have your correct SSN (very important!), have your counselor and teacher emails available, etc. This way you can remember which colleges require what and what you have done once itâs time to start applying. Start looking at the essays for the colleges that youâre thinking about applying to. Most colleges are going to make the essays available during the summer. What themes do you want do you want to write about? Our new essay questions will be available (and posted to the blog) within the next 2 to 4 weeks. Shakespeare and Chopin - 1095 Words
In one of the William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s greatest plays, Macbeth, we can see an influence years later in Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s novel The Awakening. At the end of the tragedy Lady Macbeth folds under the pressure paralleling some the burdens Edna Pontellier suffers from. Many of Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s personalities are reflected in Edna. Through the suicidal acts taken by both characters at the conclusion of the books, we can see the how Lady Macbeth influenced Chopin. Macbeth also has a great influence upon the personality of Edna. Edna has a similar battle, hers being between society and her desire to fulfill her sexual desires and be independent. Enda Pontellier finds herself in the same situation at the end of The Awakening, with a melancholy existence and nothing left to live for: ââ¬Å"There was no despondency when she fell asleep that night; nor was there hope when she awoke in the morning.â⬠(Chopin146). She goes through the motions the last few days before she makes her trip into the deep seas. Macbeth lives his last few hours with a sense of hopelessness, which Chopin entwines as a basic sentiment for Edna. Another similarity can be seen between Macbeth and Edna through their similar desires. Macbethââ¬â¢s desires of becoming king are inspired by the three withes. Robert arouses Ednaââ¬â¢s desires to engage in sexual activity. Macbeth and Edna both these desires that go against the norm of society. In order for Macbeth to rise to king he must murder King Duncan, which the society does not consider to be moral. The world we inhabit today is home to many different individuals representing several cultural and ethnic backgrounds that are all distinct from one another in some shape or form. In todayââ¬â¢s modern world, there are struggles between preserving cultural practices and conforming to the notion of ââ¬Å"progressâ⬠. Progress, at its core, implies subjectivity. The word is open to interpretation by whomever, both having positive and negative impacts on our multicultural world. The positives usually come in the form of better technologies, infrastructure, and medicines. However, the negatives that come along with progress are more complicated than its counterpart. The reader should then sort through and prioritizes information from the sea of words that is in the text. This will help indicate that comprehension can be recalled and be understood by the reader. The reader should frequently summarize the reading. This forces the reader to reorganize the information in a way that is sensible to them. Though reading can be fun, it can also be time consuming. The success of reading comprehension depends on the factors of what information is being entered into the brain and what the brain is able to do with it. It is also important to understand what you are reading to help improve your speed. This skill is acquired through years of learning. If speed reading is not the best, do not worry because there are many tips that can help a reader. One good tip is called the hand trick. The reader should place the palm of their hand flat against the reading surface. Move the hand so that the first line of text being read is above the side of the hand. Slowly move the palm to revile the words of the text at a regular speed so the reader can see the words that are being exposed. Next, is the finger trick with this method the reader should place the index finger on the first group of words that is about to be read. Move the finger in an irregular manner from the beginning of the sentence to the end. This helps the reader to focus on reading groups of words instead of individually. Another good tip to become a better reader is the card trick. Get an index card and place it over the first sentence. Then slowly begin moving it in a downwards, covering what was just read. This helps the reader to pay attention on what was just read since they will not have the opportunity to revisit the words. After the reader has finished, determine what was learned. Give the reader a chance to share what they have read in pairs or small groups. Then have them quiz themselves on the main points of the material. Tell a friend about it. By doing this, the reader should try to recall the important information in their own words. This will help them to remember and give a deeper insight into the topic. If both people have read the same material, the friend could give good feedback to ensure that the reader comprehends what was being read. The goal of having them discuss this is to involve more people so they can all make sure they can comprehend the reading. This process will solidify the knowledge in the mind and give the reader a better recall of the information. Also include any thoughts that might have popped into your mind and discuss the information. The evidence that reading comprehension can be taught and learned is convincing. ââ¬Å"Teachers need to make sure that children are familiar with all of the reading strategies and that they are given plenty of opportunities to use themâ⬠(Pardo, 2011). Youââ¬â¢ll achieve the best results using the set of strategies in this paper. Nurse with effective clinical judgment skills can facilitate positive outcome in patients., whereas those with poor clinical reasoning skill can contribute to medical errors. This reflects that competent professional practice is dependent not just on clinical knowledge but also on thinking abilities of patients (Levett-Jones Hoffman, 2013). The essay focuses on analyzing the case of Katie McConnell, a 23 years old patient with mild traumatic brain injury and completing the assessment of patient by means of the key elements of the clinical reasoning cycle. While considering the patients situation in the chosen case scenario, it has been found that Katie McConnell is a 23 year old woman who was admitted to the hospital after being hit by a slow moving care. Due to the accident, she had sustained a subdural haematoma. Subdural hematoma is a condition associated with traumatic brain injury where blood collects below the layer of the dura and the arachnoid mater. It may occur not only in patients with severe head injury, but also in patients with less severe head injuries. Patients with such head injury require emergency neurosurgical assessment and treatment (Lukasiewicz et al., 2016). Katie also has some post concussive symptoms of difficulty in recalling information. Considering this patient situation, it can be said that Katie has higher odds of poor outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This is because Bazarian et al., (2010) has shown that female has high probability of poor outcome after mTBI due to the disruption of est rogen and progesterone production. This indicates that mTBI affects the production of theses hormone leading to poorer outcome in females. Secondly, severity of injury is more in middle and elder age groups than in minor patients (Munivenkatappa et al., 2016). After observing the presenting condition of Katie, it is also necessary to collect other cues and information about patient by reviewing handover information of patients and identifying other information that may be relevant to the clinical presentation of Katie. The handover report related to vital signs of Katie were as follows HR 89, BP 142/78, SpO2 96%, RR 13. The Glasgow coma score of Katie was 14. The Glasgow Coma scale (GCS) determines the severity of the traumatic brain injury. It is based on the level of consciousness in person following a traumatic injury. It measures the cognitive function of an individual following injury such as eye opening, verbal response and motor response. The GSC score of 13-15 depicts mild traumatic brain injury, the GSC score of 9-12 reflects moderate brain injury and the score of 3-8 reveals severe brain injury (What Is the Glasgow Coma Scale, 2017). From the GSC score of Katie, it is understood that she has mild traumatic brain injury. This mean s that Katie may develop temporary or permanent neurological symptoms, which needs to be managed. Considering the vital sign report of patient, HR of 89 depicts that Kate has normal heart rate. This means she is stable currently. On the other hand, blood pressure of 142/78 suggests that Katie has high blood pressure. This might have occurred due to traumatic brain injury. The intracranial pressure and the blood pressure have relation and studies suggest that people with head injury mostly have high values of blood pressure (Mitchell et al., 2007). The SpO2 value of Katie and breathing rate of patients is normal. Some other vital information is missing in this case. For instance, mTBI leads to building up of the spinal fluid in the spaces of brain leading to increased pressure and swelling in the brain (Dang et al., 2015). However, no such detail is given for Katies case. Therefore, monitoring intracranial pressure is essential in Katies case. Secondly, TBI also has the possibility of causing brain infection due to entry of bacteria into the meninges and this has not been covered in Katies case. Injuries or damage to the cranial nerves also has the possibility affect facial sensation, vision, eye movement and facial muscle paralysis (Dethier et al., 2013). As this information is missing, Katies assessment should be done on monitoring these effect cranial nerve damage too. The next phase in the physical assessment of Katie is to process the information gained from hand over report and presenting symptoms of patients. The main presenting problem in patients according to handover report and initial assessment includes subdural hematoma, hypertension and cognitive problems such as difficulty in recalling information. It is expected that this problem have occurred mainly in patients due to head injury caused to her by motor vehicle collision. All these reflect the problems associated with people with traumatic brain injury. The problem in cognition is mainly seen in Katie because traumatic brain injury affects the connectivity of the brains and disrupts the function of areas associated with cognition (Fagerholm et al., 2015). The cognition is associated with attention and concentration, processing information, memory, communication, reasoning and problem solving. However after the traumatic brain injury, people have problem in attention, concentration, spe ech, memory and problems (Rabinowitz Levin, 2014). Hence, similar problem in concentration and memory was also seen in Katie. Accurate rehabilitation is needed to address this problem. The sudden blow to the head led to subdural hematoma in patients. This condition lead to symptoms of headache, confusion, changes in behavior and seizure in patients. Subdural hematoma was also the reason for her clinical presentation of difficulty in remembering recent information. It is necessary to check that this condition does not continue in patient for a longer period of time. Although Katie has mild traumatic brain injury which might not cause severe problem to patient, however this symptoms should be addressed so that serious complications does not develops in Katie post mild traumatic brain injury (Sivak et al., 2015). It is also necessary to analyze use of anticoagulants in patients before brain injury because this also has the chance of increasing intracranial complications (Foks et al., 2016). In such situation, knowing about the past medical history of Katie is important to prevent further complication. Inquiry about past medical history of Katie revealed that she suffe red from painful ankle because of playing football, however she did not took any painkiller for it. Hence, risk to patient due to use of anticoagulant is low and similar consideration should also be done during planning treatment for Katie. The critical reflection and judgment of patients present condition suggest that the main problem or issue in Katie is the presence of cognitive impairment in patient. In such condition, patient needs to be further assess regarding progress in subdural hematoma and mild traumatic brain injury. This might include continous assessment of neurological deficits by means of Glasgow Coma Scale. It an effective tool to assess the functional capacity of patient with traumatic brain injury and it would help to predict recovery in cognitive symptoms of patient. This form of detailed assessment will facilitate the development of systematic assistance and implementation of neurological rehabilitation for Katie (Vieira et al., 2015). The above mentioned problem of cognitive impairment as witnessed in mild traumatic injury patient is not observed in normal individual. This is mainly because normal individual do not sustain such injury and Katie has sustained such injury because of collision from a car. Such collision causes neurodegenerative damage to the brain. Neurochemical changes and changes in cerebral glucose metabolism is seem. This leads to permanent or temporary impairment, physical and psychosocial disorder accompanied with altered state of consciousness. Traumatic events cause the brain to move rapidly within the skull causing damage. The mild symptoms of traumatic brain injury such as headache, dizziness and nausea may proceed to long-term cognitive deficits in some individuals (Prins et al., 2013). Hence, the goal of treatment should be to reduce the risk of progressive neurodegenerative disease in patients like Katie. Considering the main problem observed in patients, the main physical assessment needed for Katie is to check her neurological impairment. Firstly, Montreal Cognitive Assessment technique can be used to assess the mild cognitive impairment in patients. The instrument has been found to give reliable results in detecting cognitive impairment in patients with persisting post-concussive symptoms after injury (Hunt Ouchterlony, 2014). Secondly, neuropsychological assessment will have important implications for patients, as it will determine the treatment and rehabilitation planning for Katie. This form of neuropsychological testing can be done by clinical interview with patients and then conducting several test in patient to assess cognitive and function domains. Clinical interview with patient consist of inquiry of patients education level, learning difficulty, psychological history, previous injuries and current cognitive issues of patuents. Neurosyschological testing uses scores of dif ferent tools to assess the cognitive functioning of patent (Kosaka, 2006). As Katie can have adverse neurological, psychological and psychosocial consequence due to subdural hematoma, this form of assessment will effectively quantify the deficit and facilitate early treatment for her. The cortex (used for thinking) of the brain shrinks, the spaces in the center of the brain become enlarged causing reduction of the surface area in the brain. Symptoms of AD usually occur in older adults and are the ones most at risk, although people in their 40s and 5Os may also be affected. The symptoms include a loss of intellectual capacity, loss of language skills which may include having trouble finding words, poor or decreased judgment, problems with abstract thinking, disorientation in place and time, changes in mood or behavior and changes in personality. AD does not discriminate, it affects any race, socio background or sex equally. The classic symptom of forgetfulness is part of the normal aging process and usually begins in early middle age, however, normal forgetfulness differs from Alzheimer's Disease in many important ways. The cause of Alzheimer's Disease is not exactly known. Suspected causes undergoing research are neurological damage, chemical deficiencies, viruses, environmental toxins and malfunctions in the body's disease defense systems and genetics. There is also evidence of a slightly increased risk of heridity of AD amongst children, brothers and sisters of patients with this disease. It is also important to note that AD can only be diagnosed 100% after death through an autopsy of the affected subjects brain tissue. About a third of autopsies turn up a different diagnosis and thus family members are encouraged to ask for an autopsy as a contribution to the study of the disease and about the genetics of AD. There is no single clinical test for AD. It is usually diagnosed by ruling out all other curable or incurable causes of memory loss. A positive diagnosis of this disease can only be made by microscopically studying a small piece of brain tissue after death. The cerebral cortex of an Alzheim er sufferers brain will have characteristic abnormalities such as cells marred by plaques and tangles. A working diagnosis can be made though through various testing procedures that include a complete physical as well as neurological and psychological examinations. One option that you might consider initially is College Navigator.You can specify location, size, major program, public or private, tuition, test scores, and more in your search.This tool will give you all the statistics on different schools and help you locate options that seem like the right fit.As you investigate the results of your search, add schools to your ââ¬Å"favoritesâ⬠and compare them side by side to see how they differ.This might eliminate some options based on factors like cost and admissions rate. Cappex isa college matchmaking site where you can fill out a profile and get matched up with schools that align with your preferences. If you find schools that you like, you can add them to your running list and compare them against each other. Reflective Writing And Theories Of Reflection Education Essay There are several types of reflection. As mentioned by Taylor, All types of reflection are important and a combination of these may be used to make sense of practise and to bring changes. Technical Reflection is generally used to look at clinical practices and procedures along with the scientific knowledge. However, values play no part in this. Practical Reflection on the other hand judges human experiences and assumptions. It also develops common values in-line with organizational values. Emancipatory (Critical) Reflection involves critiques of the assumptions on which our social, political and cultural beliefs are based with the prospect of changing them. Reflective Practice is concept developed by Donald Schon. There are also several models of reflection used to draw lessons out of experiences. In 1978 Argyris and Schon established the idea of single loop and double loop learning. In the former concept the organization or the individual follows the current techniques or strategies even after corrections are made to the current errors. However, the late concept involves modification of techniques and strategies. Later in 1984 Schon coined the concepts of Reflection in Action (RIA) and Reflection on Action (ROA). RIA is a concept when the practitioner is faced with an issue he makes a decision based on his feeling and prior experiences. On the other hand, Reflection on Action is an idea where the practitioner analyzes the experience after it is over. Personally, I have experienced both the concepts during several situations in life knowingly or unknowingly. Specially, during our ALE1, we were given an opportunity to reflect on ou r performance after every task. This depicted our practical implementation of Reflection on Action. By implementing the learning from previous task in the later task we have also exercised the concept of Reflection in Action. To mention an example, in the first task we were given a sheet of instructions which were tricky. However, we went to perform the task without analysing the rules and we failed to finish the task within the given time. After the reflection session, when we went on to perform the second task, we made it a point to read and understand the rules carefully. Kolbs Experiential Learning Cycle is another great contribution to this concept. This learning cycle has four stages (Concrete Experience, Reflective, Abstract Conceptualization and Active Experimentation Observation) and the reflection takes place after the situation has occurred. In the first stage the practitioner concentrates on something that they have done and later reflects and explores the new ideas to better perform the task. In the third stage he forms new ideas and experiments them in the fourth stage. This loop is continued from one task to another. is another process where the practitioner not only describes the situation but analyses it. Unlike the other models it also has an action plan stage where the reflector mentions the actions that he would like to change if the same situation occurs. Jhons model of Reflection on the other hand involves sharing the experiences with a colleague. It has two stages Looking in on ones thoughts and emotions and Looking Out at the situation experienced. Reflection on my Personal Development : Initially, when we were given learning logs for our ALE, I didnt know the importance and advantages of it unless we started writing the reflective log after every task. After learning that this is one of the best and easy ways to change oneself, I have stated using the reflective writing tool every time I wanted to develop the way I work and think. During our ALE we have used several tools to better understand ourselves. During our feedback session, we were asked to use Johari Window to know our intern-personal relationships and communication. Though I was happy about the adjectives mentioned in the public session, the adjectives mentioned in the Blind Spots section were quite surprising to me. The blind spots for me were complex and proud. When I tried to find the reasons from my colleagues for the same, I was told that though I am a friendly, work-oriented person, I sometimes get too much into detail in a group task or assignment and its difficult for them to understand me. This may be because though I am clear about the topic, I sometimes find it difficult to explain which confuses the other people. Also, the feedback I generally receive from most of the people after few days of being with me is that I thought that you are a very proud person when I initially met you. The reason for this is, when I meet new people or enter a new environment, I take some time to get acquainted and unless I know them, I dont initiate a conversation with people. Though this perception of them changes at a later stage, it gives a negative vibe to people in the initial stage. Also, according to Belbin Self-Perception Inventory, the team roles I have similarity towards are completer and specialist. These two roles reflect my working style rightly. I always try to learn more and specialize in the subject area of my interest. Also, because I am good at analysing and pay a good attention to details, I am always given the responsibility of doing the last minute polishing and editing in our group assignments. However, there are also negative sides to these team roles which I am aware of and are part of my development plan. As a specialist though I learn in-depth about the subject of my interest, I neglect other subjects which I am not interested in. Also, the blind spot complex that I have mentioned earlier can be related to the weakness of the completer. As a completer thought I try to get the every detail of the report correct, I sometimes take the perfectionism to the extremes. According to Honey and Mumfords Learning Styles, I am a Reflector. As a reflector I like to learn from activities that let me think, watch and review. However, I find is difficult to concentrate on a lecture unless I find it interesting. This can be linked to my weakness as a Specialist. According to the MBTI my personality type is ISFP (Introversion, Sensing, Feeling, and Perceiving). This shows that I am a peoples person who is friendly and dislike conflicts. But, I like to have my own space. The MBTI and IDAP grid show me on the People Caring part of the grid. This is little contradicting. Though I am comfortable working in a team, I prefer to work on my own. I find it difficult to convey a message as I feel that contradicting with others views may create problems personally. As part of the self-development, I would like to develop a skill to converse a message in a soft way and would like to learn to maintain a professional relationship with other people in team as most of the work in organization is team based. Also, would like to develop my networking skills. Reflection on my managerial skills: According to Reynolds Reflection is a management tool for problem solving. Personal traits, values, beliefs and attitudes are the core personal competencies which may enhance or weaken ones ability to manage others. Also, it is the behaviour and talent of the individual that has major influence on the performance of the company. Hence, an understanding of managerial theories is very helpful for someone who aspires to be a manager as most rational decisions are based on theories. An extensive study of the theories available is also very helpful for a manager in order to better manage their team as theories provide info about how to behave and help change the behaviour. Theories also provide a common framework and idea about practices. Over a period of time the purpose of work and the way the work is conducted is changing in the organization. The management styles have to be changed accordingly. Minor says that the more that is known about organization and their methods of operation, the better the chances of dealing effectively with them. Understanding may be more advanced than prediction, but both provide the opportunity to influence or to manage the future. Theory provides a sound basis for action. Hence, an understanding of management theories and knowledge about organization are important for a manager to better perform their tasks. Mullin in his book, Management and Organisational Behaviour has followed a frame work of four main approaches to explain the Management Theory. The Classical Approach which emphasises on the purpose and formal hierarchy of management. The classical writers concentrated on improving the operational efficient in an organization. Brench, a classical writer also provided a concept of practical approach to organization structure based on tried general principles as opposed to the concentration on specific cases. Evaluation: The classical writers are criticised for not taking the personality factors into consideration and for creating an organisation structure in which people exercise a limited control. Also, providing a set of principles to perform management duties has been subjected to criticism. Two Major sub-groups of classical approach are : Scientific Management: This concept was developed by Taylor who was a believer in the Rational-economic needs concept of motivation. The emphasis of this was on obtaining increased productivity from individual workers through the technical structuring of the work and providing monetary incentives as a motivator for higher levels of output. Though this concept has given a way to management thinking and the development of organizational behaviour, it was widely criticised by workers. Bureaucracy: This concept was defined by Weber. He didnt define the concept of Bureaucracy. However, he attempted to identify the characteristics of this type of organizations. He emphasised on the importance of administration based on expertise and discipline. In this concept, the tasks of the organization are allocated as official duties among the various positions. There is an implied clear cut division of labour and a high level of specialization. Evaluation: Over-emphasis on rules and procedures becomes more important in its own right than as a means to the end. Argyris says that bureaucracies restrict the psychological growth of the individual and cause feeling of failure. The growth of bureaucracy has evolved through the increasing size and complexity of organisations and associated demand for effective administration. This theory is founded on a formal, clearly defined and hierarchical structure. However, with rapid changes in the external environment, empowerment and greater attention to meeting the needs of customers, there is an increasing need to organise for flexibility. The Human Relations Approach: While the main emphasis of classic writers was on structure and formal organisation, the emphasis was shifted to social factors at work and the behaviour of employees at work i.e. human relations during the 1920s. The turning point in the development of the human relations movement came with the famous Hawthorne experiment at the Western Electric Company in America. During the experiment a better work environment and a concern for workers complaints has increased the productivity. Evaluation: This theory was also subjected to severe criticism. One of the criticisms is the lack of scientific approach. The Hawthorne experiment was criticised on methodology and on failure of the investigators to take sufficient account of environmental factors. After all the criticisms, the experiment did generate new ideas concerning the importance of work groups and leadership, communications, output restrictions, motivation and job design. Systems Approach: With this theory attention has been focused on the organization as systems with a number of interrelated sub-systems. This approach tries to bring together both classical and human approaches. Attention is focused on the total work organization; inter relationships of structure and range of variables within the organization. This encourages the managers to view the organization as separate parts and as a whole company as part of the large environment. The Contingency Approach: In contrast to both classical and human relations approach, this approach showed renewed concern with the importance of structure as a significant influence on organizational performance. The Contingency Approach that can be seen as the extension of system approach highlights possible means of differentiating among alternative forms of organizational structures and systems of management. This approach implies that organisation theory should not seek to suggest one best way to structure or manage organisations but should provide insights into the situational and contextual factors which influence the management decisions. Theory U is another change management method targeting leadership as process of inner knowing and social innovation developed by Otto Scharmer and originally based on a process known as the U-Process. It offers both theoretical perspective and Practical technology. As a theoretical view, it suggests that the way in which we attend to a situation determines how a situation unfolds. Practically, it provides a set of principles and practices for collectively creating the future that wants to emerge. It involves sensing and presence. There are seven stages in this theory and they are Suspending, Redirecting, Letting Go, Letting Come, Crystallizing, Prototyping and Institutionalizing. Moving down the left-hand side of the U is about opening up and dealing with the resistance of thought, emotion, and will; moving up the right-hand side is about intentionally reintegrating the intelligence of the head, the heart, and the hand in the context of practical applications. An understanding of these theories not only helped me learn how the management theory is formed and changed over a period of time, it also helped me understand the effects of these changes on organizational working styles. Also, an understanding what happened in the past prepares me for changes that may occur in the future. It also gave me an idea about the skills that I need to develop to better manage others. I lack skills like creativity and inter-personal effectiveness which are very important to manage others. Career Development Model Career management involves the matching of individual career plans with organization needs and the implementation of activities to accomplish these joint objectives. Individual Career Development is another constructive model that helps in planning the career through self-analysis. It has several stages such as Life Planning, Career Interests, Goal Planning and Development of abilities and skills. Though I always knew which field I want to get into and what I want to do in future, I never had a logical reason for my selection. This tool has helped me to analyze my interests, strengths and weaknesses and chose a career plan for myself. This development plan consists of several questionnaires about my Career Planning Values, My interests, skills, knowledge and a Priority Grid to prioritize my choices. After analyzing my inputs, I have decided a career of my interest. I always aspired to be a HR practitioner. After analysing my skills, I realized that I like Strategic Orientation and Team Orientation skills that are required to be a HR Practitioner. I will mention a development plan at a later stage along with the action plan that I am going to follow these skills. In a team environment, I can also use this model to know more about my team members career choices. Conclusion: I would like to conclude it by saying that this whole experience of reflective writing was very pleasant and helpful in knowing me with a logical reasoning and my skills. It provided me with a tool that I can use life-long to develop myself. However, I am still putting in efforts to better perform. | Strategic Orientation | I am using the technique of writing an idea on a sheet of paper and think of several strategies to about it to develop my strategic skills. The human race is the only animal that will set out to commit genocide or slaughter its own kind by amounts I can not begin to fathom. Nazi Germany almost eliminated the entire Jewish population from Europe, and killed millions before they could be stopped. Communist Russia, under the leadership of Stalin, conducted many tests and experiments on humans that lead to the deaths of millions more for no purpose other than to satisfy one manââ¬â¢s curious side. The human race for centuries, and in some parts of the world still does committed slavery. Brutality of human against human has been a common theme through the years, but if you go club one baby seal you would get the chair. Humans h ave come to accept brutality upon themselves as a fact of life but sit in disgust when it is committed against something else. Part of what makes man so dangerous and problematic is his intelligence level. The human race is the smartest thing on the planet Earth. Five-Point Linguistic Star: A Linguistic Approach Essay
Weââ¬â¢ve allowed a natural approach to language instruction to dominate our schools, hoping our English learners â⬠¨Ã¢â¬Å"will just figure it out.â⬠(SCOE, 2009) This approach suggested by Kevin Clark proposes that teachers explicitly teach ELL by giving them a set of skills. Teacher will have to teach students not just vocabulary, but the sound system of language, the words and their word parts and meanings, and also rules for structuring sentences grammatically. Teaching students from this perspective can support a deeper understanding of the language. When the concept is thoroughly supported by background knowledge, explanation as to why, activities that strengthen skills, and consistency in lesson structure that follows this pattern, students are more likely to understand the concept and create a platform from which to launch higher level thinking and conclusions on following concepts and content area. Students learn more efficiently when they have prior knowledge o n a presented concept. If the student can link content to a concept that they gained from previous knowledge on from their own unique background or culture, it will inevitably spark interest in that subject area. By sparking interest the teacher is now adding value to the lesson. Since students synonymize interest with value, the teacher would prove effective. Now a sense of purpose has now been infused into the lesson, and the student/students may begin to contribute more. (NCREL, 1990) This approach is rather intriguing, and teachers should be trained in linguistics prior to teaching ELLs. I would learn the subparts of linguistics via a course: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. By learning each subpart in-depth, I can better compose lesson plans and activities that explore those areas for the ELLs to better benefit. Understanding the mechanics of a language is just as important as understanding the language itself, for both teachers andà students. The concept of prior knowledge should not be limited to the students but teachers should utilize this concept for their own effective instruction. If teachers have prior knowledge of the subparts of the English language, as well as knowledge of the diverse cultures he/she is instructing can help the teacher create and blend a comprehensive and student-inclusive lesson plan and curriculum. Prior knowledge influences how the teacher and students interact with the learning materials as both individuals and a group. (Kujawa and Huske, 1995) Prior knowledge assists in segue of appropriate instruction and retention, because it is a foundation from which to build from and facilitates the idea of making sense of the educational experience. As the students are learning from the linguistic perspective, especially under syntax and semantics, students would be primed for grammatical instruction, also. As they learn how, where and when to use appropriate vocabulary, I will insert instruction on main grammatical principles and rules and branch off into further instruction where applicable. I would try to make sound non-confusing connections with the native language grammatical principles, so there is a prior knowledge foundation established in that arena as well. I would also have a grammar day in the middle of the week to review prior concepts and morph new grammar lessons into the lesson plan and utilize formative assessment strategies to see what needs to be reviewed and further defined.
